Breaking into the world of EMS as a young student can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Here are our tips to help you get started.

Find a program that works for you.

First, consider the kind of city you would feel be comfortable working in— do you want to work in a busy city? Do you want to be close to home or in a new landscape? All these are important factors to think about when picking the right EMT program for you.

Make a study group

Forming a solid study group is a great way to connect with your classmates and make lifelong friends. Maybe your path will take you to different cities, companies, and so forth—but working together through the NREMT will make you lifelong companions. I know of many friends who connected through studying for the NREMT.

Be prepared to learn from your mistakes.

As a younger part of the class or company, older and more experienced EMS professionals will guide the way. Use the beginning of your career to listen and take in advice from accomplished professionals.

Help other young people.

Getting started as an EMT can be hard— but with the right attitude you can use your experience to help others young EMTs. Don’t be afraid to take new hires under your wing when you get the chance.
