Hey everyone, I’m Amanda, a writer at EMS University.

There’s no secret that when you become an EMT, you enter a different universe, unlike one you’ve known before.

You’re now apart of a thrilling ride, one where you’re constantly learning and taking your body to it’s deepest limits. I’ve compiled a list of 5 essential signs you work as an EMT. Enjoy!

Here are 5 signs You are definitely an EMT;

1. You’ve could have a degree in multitasking…and patiently waiting…and being up at strange hours of the day…

EMT life is not for weak willed or faint of heart. Juggling tasks, working at 3am, all while maintaining a level head is just part of the job. This is what makes time in between your shifts a prized time of rest and recovery.

2. Your partner is your sidekick, ally, and greatest confidant.

Completing 12 hour shifts together will undoubtedly bring you close to your partner, but try not to unload every little life problem onto them, okay? They’re trying to pay attention to the road.

3. Strangers notice and respect the uniform…

They say EMTs are the sharpest dressed on the field. Legend has it that no one can resist the button-up shirt and freshly pressed pant combo that fit like a dream— no wonder strangers will stop you on the street to thank you for saving lives, or even offer to pay for your coffee before your shift.

4. You’re a pro in deescalating tricky situations…

Though “patients” sounds like “patience,” the two words have completely different meanings. Sometimes your patients have no issue letting you know whats on their colorful mind. If you’re an EMT, you know not to take things too personal and are always quick to resolve any conflict with empathy and grace.

5. Your family has no clue what you’re talking about, but loves your stories…

If you’re an EMT, the moment you open the door, your family or friends will be waiting for you on the couch with popcorn in hand, dying to hear about your day. They’re basically living vicariously through you and your adventurous tales.

There is never a dull moment as an EMT, that’s for sure.

There you have it, 5 signs you’re definitely an EMT. Keep up the good work and be kind to yourself.
